Abstract Lakes from the Antarctic maritime region experience climate change as a main stressor capable of modifying their plankton community structure and function, essentially because summer temperatures are commonly over the freezing point and the lake's ice cap thaws. This study was conducted in such seasonally ice-covered lake (Lake Limnopolar, Byers Peninsula, Livingston Is., Antarctica), which exhibits a microbial dominated pelagic food web. International audience; In this study, the influence of environmental factors on the germination time of Penicillium camemberti and Penicillium roqueforti conidia was evaluated. To do so, the effects of i/temperature, pH, water activity, and ii/organic acids were determined using models based on i/cardinal values, and ii/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) respectively. Cardinal values for germination of conidia were not observed to be species dependent. Minimum temperatures were estimated to be below the freezing point, with an optimum of 26.9 degrees C, and a maximum of 33.5 degrees C. Research aims at benchmarking the quality of raw milk supplied by four private farms in the county of Sibiu at a distance of about 25 km each for a period of three months (April, May, June 2010). Samples were subject to particularly microbiological measurements (total number of germ and somatic cells), physico-chemical (acidity, fat density, non-fat dry matter, protein and freezing point titre) by international standard methods. A laboratory study on the uptake of HCl, HNO3, and SO2 gas by ice crystals and the effect of these gases on the evaporation rate of the crystals

The results of our new and earlier laboratory studies on the uptake of gases by ice crystals are summarized in terms of (1) the equilibrium phase diagram for a system gas/H2O, (2) the effect of these gases on the evaporation rate of ice crystals, and (3) in terms of the uptake of the gases by water drops. It is shown that the intrinsic quasi-liquid layer significantly affects the uptake of a gas by an ice surface in that, depending on the gas phase concentration, the layer thickness may be considerably increased by depressing the equilibrium freezing point causing additional surface melting. Properties of new low melting point quaternary ammonium salts with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion

Eight new monocationic quaternary ammonium (QA) salts with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion were prepared by metathesis using our previously reported QA halides as precursors. New salts were characterized both in liquid and solid state using 1 H and 13 C NMR techniques, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis together with X-ray diffraction and thermoanalytical methods. Classical growth of hard-sphere colloidal crystals.

The classical theory of nucleation and growth of crystals is examined for concentrated suspensions of hard-sphere colloidal particles. The work of Russel is modified, extended, and evaluated, explicitly. Specifically, the Wilson-Frenkel growth law is modified to include the Gibbs-Thomson effect and is evaluated numerically. The results demonstrate that there is a critical nucleus radius below which crystal nuclei will not grow. A kinetic coefficient determines the maximum growth velocity possible. Multioverlap Simulations of the 3D Edwards-Anderson Ising Spin Glass

We introduce a novel method for numerical spin glass investigations: Simulations of two replica at fixed temperature, weighted such that a broad distribution of the Parisi overlap parameter $q$ is achieved. Canonical expectation values for the entire $q$-range (multi-overlap) follow by re-weighting. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach by studying the $3d$ Edwards-Anderson Ising ($J_{ik}=\pm 1$) spin glass in the broken phase ($\beta=1$). For the first time it becomes possible to obtain reliable results about spin glass tunneling barriers. In addition, as do some earlier numerical studies, our results support that Parisi mean field theory is valid down to $3d$.

On the applicability of density dependent effective interactions in cluster-forming systems

We systematically studied the validity and transferability of effective, coarse-grained, pair potentials in ultrasoft colloidal systems. We focused on amphiphilic dendrimers, macromolecules which can aggregate into clusters of overlapping particles to minimize the contact area with the surrounding (implicit) solvent. Simulations were performed for both the monomeric and coarse-grained model in the liquid phase at densities ranging from infinite dilution up to values close to the freezing point. Seasonality of sheep milk freezing point and relationship with other chemical and physical milk parameters

Milk freezing point (FP) is an important quality indicator which can be used for determination of possible adulteration of the milk with water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on ewe FP produced in Sicily during the last 10 years of investigation. A total of 1,996 samples of raw bulk ewes’ milk were collected from 295 dairy factories located in western Sicily (Italy). The average of the FP during the entire period of investigations was -0.560 °C ± 0.013 °C. The seasonality of milk FP showed that at the beginning of lactations (September) the FP was -0.554°C, than it decreased up to December (-0.561°C).
